Abūr-Raddād al-Laythī fell ill. When‘Abdur-Raḥmān Ibn-‘Awf visited him he said, "I have always known you to be the best [of people] and the most preserving [of kinship ties], Abū-Muḥammad (1)". ‘Abdur-Raḥmān replied, "I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, say, 'God said, "I am God and I am the All-Merciful (ar-Raḥmān). I created the womb (ar-Raḥim (2)) and derived a name for it from my own. Whoever upholds its ties of kinship, I will maintain ties with him, and whoever severs them, I will sever ties with him."'" (1) Abū-Muḥammad is ‘Abdur-Raḥmān Ibn-‘Awf, the narrator of this ḥadīth. (2) ar-Raḥim is the Arabic word for womb and is a metonymy for kinship ties. Click on ḥadīth to read more
